In long vests and secret threads
the hidden shadow wraps.
Invisible, she greets me at the entrance of the past
and of my memories takes the paths.
Blows on the compact dust of crumbled walls,
those red brick-walls, that once my playground were.
Glides onto sacred porches, with inescapable rules awash,
Behind ancient school-desks that still conceals me from the grown-ups world.
On the shining plate lingers the name of the one I’ve lost,
my sole voice of the mighty chant at the apex of the psalm.
The highest tops she reaches for,
only to be followed along endless stairs, since ever steep of wood and creaks.
And at the end, out she comes, dipped in the unbearable lament of a dying town.
A last whisper before vanishing: !זכור….. Remember!
